Hawaii Phrases

Although it can look like a daunting task, knowing a few Hawaiian phrases can be useful and fun on your holiday and the warm & welcoming Hawaiian locals will appreciate the gesture even if you don't quite get it right first time.

A few simple rules will help you, so remember each syllable is either a vowel on its own or a vowel and a consonant. So for example Hawaii’s state fish, humuhumunukunukuapua’a, is pronounced hu-mu-hu-mu-nu-ku-nu-ku-a-pu-a-a.

The vowels are pronounced slightly differently:

a sounds like ah

i sounds like ee

u sounds like oo
